Location: BotswanaExperience the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve, Makgadikgadi Pans and other exciting tourist attractions. WELCOME TO BOTSWANA Botswana is one of the last remaining safari destinations in Africa where you can experience the magic of The Okavango Delta, the Makgadikgadi salt pans, the vast openness of the Kalahari and the huge herds of elephant in Chobe. Botswana displays a true commitment to wildlife conservation with approximately 20% of the country protected as a national park or wildlife management area. Botswana is world renowned for its wildlife, including, lion, leopard, wild dog, hyena, cheetah, elephant, buffalo, sable antelope, red lechwe, sitatunga, kudu, large herds of zebra and wildebeest and other wild animals. The Kalahari Desert covers a staggering 84% of Botswana. The Okavango Delta formed as the wide, fast-flowing Okavango River spills out across a massive area of sand where it eventually soaks away. The Makgadikgadi Pans marks the death bed of the great Lake Makgadikgadi. The Chobe River is the only river in Botswana that flows all year round. THE SOUTHERN KALAHARI The Kalahari is a vast semidesert which, unlike true deserts, does receive erratic rainfall. THE KGALAGADI TRANSFRONTIER PARK The Gemsbok National Park was the first national park to be established in Botswana in 1937 to protect the environment and herds of wildlife that roamed the area. In 2000 this park was amalgamated with the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park on the South African side to form Africa’s first formally declared trans border conservation area – the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. THE MAKGADIKGADI PANS The Makgadikgadi is the largest salt pan in the world. There are numerous pans in the Makgadikgadi. The three major pans are, Ntwetwe Pan, Sowa Pan and Nxai Pan. To reach these remote areas, you will have to pass through Francistown, the gateway to Northern Botswana. NATA BIRD SANCTUARY This sanctuary is found on the far northeastern edge of Sowa Pan and apart from the Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans, is the only protected reserve in the area. The area is an important breeding ground for flamingoes and pelicans. BAINES BAOBABS This remarkable cluster of trees, also known as the seven sisters, were made famous by the painter and naturalist, Thomas Baines. The seven giant trees dominate a small island on the edge of the open grassless Kudiakam Pan. NXAI PAN Nxai Pan is covered with short sweet grass which attracts large herds of springbok and impala. THE TULI BLOCK The Tuli Block is a thin strip of commercial farmland which includes the largest privately owned game conservation area in southeastern Africa. THE CENTRAL KALAHARI GAME RESERVE This area was originally intended as a sanctuary for its human inhabitants, the Bushmen. The last of these Bushmen (San) now reside in small village communities in the reserve at places like Xade, Xaka, Molap and Meseamonong. DECEPTION VALLEY Deception Valley is all that remains of a sprawling riverbed that has long since dried up. THE KHAMA RHINO SANCTUARY This game reserve on tribal land is intended to provide a safe environment for the re-establishment of both black and white rhino populations. The rhino share the reserve with a variety of indigenous game including, red hartebeest, ostrich, brown hyena, leopard, jackal, steenbok, duiker, bat-eared fox, lynx and wildcat. KHUTSE GAME RESERVE Khutse is dotted with more than 60 seasonal pans, consisting of wide open savannah plains of dry grassland with a sparse covering of thorn trees. Here visitors are likely to see cheetah, leopard and lion. CHOBE NATIONAL PARK The park has four distinct areas: the Chobe River frontage including Serondela, the central area around Nogatsaa and the associated pans, Linyanti with its riverine marshes and papyrus beds and the Savuti area which includes the Mababe Depression. THE OKAVANGO DELTA The Okavango is the worlds larges inland delta covering 15,000 square kilometers of lush wetland. This area contains an incredible 95% of all surface water in Botswana and one of Africa’s prime tourist destinations. MOREMI GAME RESERVE Moremi is described as one of the most beautiful and varied reserves in Africa with an unprecedented concentration of wildlife.
